Xbox Companion, launched in 2014, allowed users to manage Xbox profiles, access games from the Microsoft Store, and interact with friends and gaming groups. It also offered access to the Game Pass catalog and the console’s Remote Play feature, although the latter hadn’t been working very well for some time.
With the launch of the Xbox app in 2019, Microsoft consolidated all its gaming offerings into a single space, while also introducing cloud gaming features and improved management of the installed game library. Given this, the decision to discontinue the Xbox Companion makes sense, since the newer app offered the same features more efficiently.
Microsoft's social features will be consolidated into the Game Bar, which is accessed by default using the Win + G shortcut, but it remains unclear whether the feature for streaming from consoles to PCs will be added to other apps or has been permanently discontinued.
