Take-Two takes down GTA V mod that used artificial intelligence

August 19, 2023, at 6:24 p.m.

The mod Sentient Streets, recognized for his contribution of generative artificial intelligence resources to the world of GTA V, was taken out of circulation following a request from the Take-Two Interactive. This led to the removal of the mod from the website NexusMods and in the removal of the videos that originally demonstrated its features on YouTube.

The person responsible for developing the mod, under the pseudonym of Bloc, made a point of clarifying that all actions were taken solely at the publisher's initiative, and that there was no direct contact of any kind.

In addition, he expressed his belief that the removal of the content was the result of manual intervention, not an automated moderation process.

Modder is disappointed:

Bloc expressed disappointment at the hostile stance taken and indicated his willingness to engage in constructive dialogue if Take-Two Interactive had opted for a less aggressive approach. He also contested the reason given for removing the Sentient Streets promotional video, arguing that this justification is unfounded, since numerous GTA V videos remain available on YouTube.

He also emphasized that it was open-source and available free of charge to anyone interested. When using Sentient Streets, players were introduced to NPCs whose verbal interactions were automatically generated based on a preconfigured database.

Rockstar vs. the modding community:

The modder expressed regret that he did not have the resources or the time needed to mount a legal defense in this situation. He shared his perspective as an independent modder who works on these projects in his spare time, driven by a desire to have fun, and, as such, does not have the means to engage in legal proceedings in this context.

In addition, he mentioned the history of tensions between Rockstar Games and the modding community, although he noted a recent increase in the company's interest in popular projects, such as GTA RP, integrating them into its own frameworks.
