Former World of Warcraft director starts the drama:
It all started with a post by Mark Kern, a former director of World of Warcraft, in the X(Twitter), where he shared a screenshot of Starfield’s title screen last Saturday, the 19th. In the image’s caption, Kern suggested that the screen’s “simplicity” might indicate that the development team didn’t have time to focus on that aspect of the game.
The Appearance of Start Screens.

A game's start screen can reveal a lot about how rushed the team was and how much pride they took in their work.

Kern said, “A game’s title screen can reveal a lot about how rushed the production was and how proud the developers are of their work.” He interpreted the simple screen as a sign that the game may have been developed under a tight deadline or that the developers simply didn’t prioritize that aspect.
In a subsequent post, Kern elaborated further on his perspective. He explained that the title screen is often one of the last things developers create, since most of their time is devoted to the main production of the game. Kern also argued that it is common for the title screen to undergo substantial changes after release, since teams that take pride in their work often refine its visual appearance.
Bethesda's head of publishing responds sarcastically:
Kern's comments reached Pete Hines, Bethesda's head of publishing, who not only explained the decision to use a simpler screen but also took the opportunity to respond to Kern in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
In response to a fan who sarcastically suggested that Bethesda should focus on the title screen instead of various systems and gameplay aspects, Hines replied that the developers did what they wanted, and the title screen they chose was one of the group’s first decisions. He also noted that having an opinion is valid, but questioning another developer’s commitment in an unprofessional manner is not appropriate.
Or they designed what they wanted, and that’s been our menu for years—it was one of the first things we decided on.

Having an opinion is one thing. Questioning a developer’s “care” just because you would have done it differently is highly unprofessional coming from another “dev.”
Even the production company's profile inXile, known for games such as Clockwork Revolution e Wasteland 3, joined in on the lighthearted banter. In a post—which has since been removed—inXile joked that it was directing all of its development resources toward the title screen, resulting in an extensive title screen that would outlast the game’s campaign.
