A Apple announced the iPadOS 16 during the WWDC 2022, and it's a pretty robust update. Not all iPads will be able to be updated, but here's a surprise and a spoiler: the fifth-generation iPad will still receive the update, contrary to rumors that it would stop at version 15 of the operating system.

The latest update is removing two iPad models from the list: the iPad Air 2, released in 2014, and the iPad Mini 4, released in 2015. Both are quite old models, and they have been supported for a long time. These are the only two models being phased out, which means that all standard iPad and iPad Pro models can still run iPadOS 16 (provided they are compatible with iPadOS 15, of course).
iPads compatible with iPadOS 16:
- iPad (5th generation)
- iPad (6th generation)
- iPad (7th generation)
- iPad (8th generation)
- iPad (9th generation)
- iPad Air (3rd generation)
- iPad Air (4th generation)
- iPad Air (5th generation)
- iPad Mini (4th generation)
- iPad Mini (5th generation)
- iPad Pro (1st generation)
- iPad Pro (2nd generation)
- iPad Pro (3rd generation)
- iPad Pro (4th generation)
- iPad Pro (5th generation)
If you have one of the compatible devices, iPadOS 16 will be available later this year, likely around September or October, if past years are any indication. It’s worth noting that some of the new features won’t work on all iPads—specifically, desktop apps and Stage Manager. These features are exclusive to iPads equipped with the Apple M1 processor: the iPad Pro and the fifth-generation iPad Air.
