What's New in iPadOS 17
Custom lock screens

One of the main new features in iOS 16 was the customizable lock screen. Users can now apply advanced customizations to this part of iOS, including changing the font type, color, and language of the clock. In addition, users can add useful widgets and create custom wallpapers. However, iPadOS 16 did not receive any updates to the lock screen. Now, Apple is bringing the updated lock screen features—introduced with the iPhone 14 series last year—to iPadOS 17. Soon, iPad users will be able to use Live Photo wallpapers on the lock screen. When you select a Live Photo from your gallery, the new iPadOS 17 will automatically create a slow-motion video that moves and reacts as you unlock your iPad.
In addition, you’ll be able to customize the clock style, color, and even the font weight on the lock screen. In iPadOS 17, one of the biggest changes is the addition of widgets to the lock screen. Now you can add your favorite widgets to the lock screen, giving you quick access to important information without having to unlock your tablet.
Enhanced Widgets

In addition to adding widgets to the lock screen, Apple is making widgets more interactive in iPadOS 17. For example, if you have a Reminders widget, you can check off completed tasks and see the updates reflected in both the widget and the corresponding app. In addition, you’ll be able to control smart home devices and play audio directly from the widgets, providing a more convenient and intuitive experience. These features aren’t limited to the iPad’s Home screen—they’re also available on the lock screen.
Enhanced PDF Edition

In iPadOS 17, Apple is introducing improvements to PDF editing. The system will be able to analyze PDF documents, identify text fields, and make it easier to fill in information such as addresses and other personal details. In addition, the Notes app will be able to integrate these documents, allowing you to view PDFs full-screen and take notes and make sketches using the Apple Pencil. Real-time collaboration will also be possible in the Notes app, allowing multiple people to work together and see changes in real time.
More Fun with Messages

The Messages app will also receive some improvements in iPadOS 17. One of the new features is animated stickers, called Live Stickers. You’ll be able to create your own stickers from images and use them in conversations or react to messages you receive. In addition, Messages will now automatically transcribe audio messages, allowing you to read them when listening isn’t an option. Other improvements include the ability to quickly reply to messages in the queue by swiping your finger over them, jump to the last unread message by tapping the up arrow, and share your real-time location in a conversation.
Security Improvements in Safari
Apple is adding new features to Safari to make it more secure and help you separate work from personal use. You’ll now be able to create different profiles—such as personal and professional—in Safari, keeping cookies, history, and tab groups separate. This will allow you to keep your work and personal activities more organized and secure. In addition, private browsing in Safari will be enhanced, allowing you to lock the browser window with Face ID or Touch ID, preventing others from viewing the content, even when you’re not there.
More control over your health

The Health app will also be available on iPadOS 17, allowing you to access detailed information about your health on the iPad’s larger screen. All data collected by your Apple Watch can be viewed and used in the Health app on iPadOS 17, offering a more comprehensive view of your health metrics. With the larger screen, you’ll have more space to explore and analyze your health data in greater detail. In addition, developers will have access to the HealthKit API for iPad, allowing them to create even more advanced health apps that take advantage of the iPad’s generous screen real estate.
Other updates include:
- Improvements to Stage Manager, offering users more options for organizing and resizing their windows, resulting in a more efficient and enjoyable experience.
- The Freeform feature has also been enhanced with new drawing tools, allowing users to draw lines, align objects, and add shapes to objects.
- Siri has also been improved in iPadOS 17; it now responds to the simple voice command “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri,” providing a more natural and streamlined interaction with the virtual assistant.
