The world's first commercially available cell phone was the Motorola Dynatac 8000X, invented by the engineer Martin Cooperin April 3, 1973, which he introduced to the world himself, earning him the reputation as the “father of the cell phone.”.

It was 25 cm long and 7 cm wide, and weighed 1 kg. Its battery life was about 40 minutes of use, 8 hours on standby, and it took 10 hours to charge. Its only features were making and receiving calls.

Despite this achievement, prior to that, in 1888, the German physicist Heinrich Hertz (after whom the unit "Hertz" is named) first transmitted sound signals over the air, which made the first long-distance telephone call possible in 1914.

Prior to that, in 1956, the Ericsson decided to combine all the technologies previously developed in the fields of telephony, radio transmission frequencies, etc., to create the cell phone, the Ericsson MTA (Mobile Telephony A). However, despite this, the device was only “mobile” if it was transported in a car, since it weighed 40 kilograms, and its high production cost hindered its widespread adoption; therefore, it is not actually considered a mobile phone.

The first commercially released cell phone in Brazil was the Motorola PT-550, back in 1990. It had an external antenna on top of the phone and a flip-phone design—it opened and closed—which was quite stylish for its time.

Why is a cell phone called a "cell phone"?

Cell phones are called “cell phones” because each tower and its coverage map resemble a biological cell; the cellular network divides a city’s area into small cells, allowing millions of people to use their cell phones simultaneously.
