The first cell phone call made with the DynaTAC 8000X marks its 50th anniversary

April 3, 2023, at 7:38 p.m.

On April 3, 1973, an engineer from the American company Motorola made a call that marked the beginning of a new era for humanity. The phone he used weighed almost one kilo and took 10 hours to charge for just 30 minutes of talk time, but the Motorola DynaTac 8000X It was the world's first commercial cell phone.

Its inventor, Martin Cooper, had just made his first call to Joel Engel, a researcher at a competing firm.

Half a century later, Cooper’s invention is used by more than 68% of the population, and the average usage is five hours per day, representing 30% of the owners’ lifetimes. Cell phones have evolved into sophisticated smartphones, which are powerful enough to be used as computers. 92.3% of mobile phones have internet access.

Mobile phone use is increasing year after year, and 5.44 billion people have access to one, with 168 million new users in the past 12 months.

Cooper's invention became one of humanity's greatest revolutions because of the changes it brought to our lives—even more so than the landline telephone. It took nearly 65 years for the conventional telephone to reach 100 million users, but the cell phone surpassed 6 billion in less than 50 years.

Although Cooper did not foresee that cell phones would evolve into devices with digital cameras and internet access, he did predict that everyone would have a cell phone.
